GYUMRI, FEBRUARY 7, ARMENPRESS: Armenian trade and economic development minister Karen Chshmaritian argued Wednesday that reopening of the closed borders with the neighboring Turkey would provide additional impulses for reviving the economy of the northern province of Shirak that borders with Turkey.
He traveled February 6 to Gyumri to meet with local businessmen to, as he said during the meeting “to look into a plan of actions to restore the province’s economy.”
The minister said that after protracted debates in the govenrment on this problem the cabinet has come to a conclusion that the struggling province that boasts of having the highest unemployment level in Armenia, must be given a special attention with the emphasis on boosting small and medium-sized enterprises. He said that once operating big enterprises would be maintained with the govenrment trying to seek investors for them.
Chshmaritian said the govenrment plan of actions will take into account all provincial peculiarities and the available potential. The local branch of the Armenian trade and industrial chamber is supposed to expand membership and a center for development of small and medium-sized enterprises will be set up later this year.
