MOSCOW (AP) _ Russia’s natural gas monopoly Gazprom on Friday resumed full deliveries of gas to Georgia and Armenia, meeting a presidential order to get the supply back up and running.
A rock slide on Jan. 14 severely damaged the North Caucasus-Transcaucasia pipeline, which Gazprom had been using to supply the two former Soviet republics with 12 million cubic meters (423.73 million cubic feet) of gas a day. The company switched to the Vladikavkaz-Tbilisi line, but a separate rock slide four days later also knocked that out.
Russian President Vladimir Putin on Thursday ordered Gazprom to get the supplies moving again, giving the state-connected company 24 hours to resume exports, Interfax news agency reported.
Gazprom said in a statement that the gas supplies resumed Friday afternoon via the Vladikavkaz-Tbilisi line. Repair work continues on the North Caucasus-Transcaucasia pipeline, the company said.
It was not immediately clear if the disruption had led to any problems in Georgia and Armenia, although Russia’s ITAR-Tass news agency reported that Armenia had shifted to its reserves and was restricting supply.
