YEREVAN, JANUARY 24, ARMENPRESS: A senior Armenian diplomat reaffirmed earlier this week that Armenia is willing to launch a political dialogue with neighboring Turkey for building good neighborly relations without any preconditions.
Armenia’s permanent representative at the Council of Europe Christian Ter-Stepanian’s remarks followed a decision by the Council of Europe Ministerial session that has called on both countries to overcome their differences and embark on normalization of their relationship.
The Council of Europe’s decision came as an answer to a written request by the head of Armenian delegation at the Council of Europe Parliamentary Assembly (PACE) Hovhaness Hovhanesian who had requested a year ago that PACE should give its assessment to the continued blockade of Armenia by Turkey.
Armenian diplomat argued that the blockade as well as the absence of diplomatic relations between the two neighbor countries run counter to the principles on which the Council of Europe is built. Ter-Stepanian was quoted by Armenian foreign affairs ministry as saying that this questions remain as destabilizing factors for the region hindering free circulation of goods and people’s traveling and having their negative impact on all regional countries.
“We believe that Armenia-Turkish relations should not be submitted to the interests of a third state. Armenia is confident that improvement of relations with Turkey will be mutually beneficial.” he said.
