YEREVAN, JANUARY 21, ARMENPRESS: Armenian authorities have reconfirmed today that the nuclear power station in Metsamor will be reactivated January 23 without a planned partial refueling. A spokeswoman for Armenian energy ministry Lusine Harutunian said that that damages at two pipelines at Russian-Georgian border shipping Russian natural gas to Georgia and Armenia will not affect the reactivation schedule.
The Armenian nuclear power plant was brought to a halt last October 19 to replace one third of its operating fuel worth $8 million and was supposed to become operational in 45 days, but the government’s failure to pay the outstanding debts for Russian nuclear fuel supplies and for a fresh one has delayed its reactivation.
Following intensive talks in Moscow Armenian energy minister Armen Movsisian said last week the problem was settled and the ministry will buy more fuel to produce electricity for 300 consecutive days.
The plant will be brought to another halt in April for refueling after the cassettes with uranium have been shipped to Armenia.
