The French capital of Paris will host an unprecedented international conference on February 1
and 2, titled Pro Armenia. The aim of the conference is to consistently keep Armenian issues in
the spotlight of various international political circles. The conference will take place in the
French Senate Hall.
Representatives of more than twenty countries, including Russia, the United States, Argentina
and Lebanon, who are actively involved in Armenian issues, are expected to participate.
Foreign political and intellectual activists, as well as ministers and ambassadors will be present,
as will parliamentarians and politicians from Armenia and other Diaspora communities. A total
of eighty participants are expected.
The conference is organized by the ANC European body of the Armenian Revolutionary
Federation—European Armenian Federation for Justice and Democracy—which cooperates with
ANC entities worldwide.
The foreign minister of Armenia Vartan Oskanian will participate both in the conference and,
along with the conference organizers, will be present at a press conference scheduled for
January 31 at the Hotel Le Faubourg.
Armenian political thought has consistently recognized the necessity of presenting factual
premises to the international community in order to gain support. Therefore, it is not by
chance that the name of the conference is Pro-Armenia.
In order to develop external relations in Europe at the turn of the 20th Century, the ARF
published in France, the periodical journal Pro-Armenia. It served as the international
French-language source of information about, and voice for, the cause of the Armenian
people.
Its editors and contributors were from the political and literary-cultural elite of France,
including Pierre Quillard (editor), Jean Jaures, Anatole France, Francis de Pressense, Georges
Clemenceau, Victor Berard, E. de Roberty, Destournelles de Constant, Urbain Gohier, Denys
Gochin, Jacquelard, and others. From England, the main contributor was James Bryce, from
Italy, Enrico Ferri and Chibriani, and so on.
The February conference will hold three sessions. Conference topics will include Armenia and
Armenians in The 21st Century, Armenia’s Integration into the Caucasus
Economy-Challenging Globalization, and Hai Tahd, The Genocide and The 21st Century.
The upcoming collective gathering in Paris is more important now than ever: Turkey, with its
denial of the Armenian Genocide and Continued Blockade of Armenia, has spared no effort in
its attempt to enter the European Union. The caliber of the conference attendees nevertheless
proves Armenians have the collective power and force to counter all anti-Armenian activities
and interests.
The Paris conference will contribute to clarifying the stance of Armenians, and will convey, to
the international political community, the work of Armenians worldwide, the protection of
rights in seeking a just solution.
The Pro-Armenia conference will review past experiences and come up with methods to realize
projected goals. The conference will not be local and community-oriented; rather, with the
participation of political-public activists from various countries, will discuss fundamental
pan-Armenian issues and suggest new strategies.
