Berlin (dpa) – Armenian President Robert Kocharian was meeting with German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder on Tuesday for talks focused on trade and security issues, officials said. Kocharian, who is on a state visit, also met with Germany’s mainly ceremonial head of state, Johannes Rau, and Foreign Minister Joschka Fischer.
Officials said boosting trade ties and the unresolved conflict with Azerbaijan over the ethnic Armenian region of Nagorno Karabakh in Azerbaijan topped the agenda. A statement by Rau said the Armenian leader stressed the fundamentally different position of his country and Azerbaijan on the Nagorno Karabakh issue.
Foreign Minister Fischer encouraged Kocharian to continue recently started talks between the Armenian and Turkish foreign ministers. The Turkish-Armenian border has been closed for years due, among other things, to the Nagorno Karabakh conflict.
