A center for diamond wholesale will be created in Armenia. According
to head of the precious stones and jewelry department of the Armenian
Trade and Economy Ministry Gagik Mkrtchyan, the creation of such
center is necessary for the development of diamond cutting in the
country; it will be envisaged in the development program of the
industry within the next four to five years. “I do not expect it to
be a very large trade center under the world standards, but we must
have a try,” Mkrtchyan said. He pointed out that the concept of the
industry’s development, worked out in 1998, “has been implemented in
full as of today; the country needs a new program in order to
continue moving forward”. “Our potential is considerable enough to
pass from a diamond processing country to a participant of the world
diamond market,” Mkrtchyan was quoted by the ARKA news agency as
saying.
