ArmeniaLiberty: More Arrrests Made in Murder of Armenian TV Executive

Hrach Melkumian in Yerevan

There have been more arrests in connection with the murder of the chief of Armenian state television and radio.

Tigran Naghdalian– a supporter of President Robert Kocharian — was fatally wounded when shot by a gunman on Saturday after leaving his parents’ home in the capital Yerevan. The murder sparked a public outcry across Armenia, as well as condemnations by the government.

Three member of the Karabakh war veterans “Tigran Mets” were detained today in connection with the murder. The group does not support any compromises with Azerbaijan in the dispute over Nagorno-Karabakh, a mostly ethnic Armenian enclave within Azerbaijan. At a press conference today in Yerevan, however, a spokesperson for the group denied any involvement in the death of Naghdalian.

Yesterday, authorities said they had detained two other suspects, also with ties to a small organization with a hard-line position on Nagorno-Karabakh. A total of eight suspects are now being detained in connection with the murder of Naghdalian. But prosecutors told RFE/RL today they have no lead suspects nor a motive for the murder.
