YEREVAN, DECEMBER 13, ARMENPRESS: Chairman of the CIS Energy Council Vladimir Jahangirov praised today Armenian authorities for overcoming a severe energy crisis that hit the country in early 90-s after the closure of the Armenian nuclear power and transport blockade imposed by Armenia’s neighbors Turkey and Azerbaijan.
Jahangirov is participating in a meeting of energy experts from several CIS and European countries in Yerevan to look into possibilities for increasing safety operation of energy generating plants. Speaking to reporters, he also praised Armenian -Iranian cooperation in energy filed, adding that the council works towards joining Armenian power grid to CIS energy system.
“There is a shortage of energy in some southern Russian territories in winter-time and we believe that Armenia can ship up to 500 megawatt energy to these regions, ” he said, adding that cooperation in energy sector may induce political leaders of the volatile region to restore also their former contacts and relations.
According to Armenian energy minister Armen Movsisian, Armenian can have up to $100 million annually energy exporting capacities.
