The United Nations World Food Program Headquarters in Rome announced the winners of a competition that it had announced earlier this year for children’s designs to print a WFP Calendar for 2003 and post cards. As the high-level jury commented, selection had not been easy, since they had to select from 145 designs sent by 29 Country Offices. The theme of the drawings was school feeding, a press release by WFP Armenia office said.
The WFP staff in Armenia has announced that two schoolgirls from the secondary school in Vaghatin Village of Syunik Marz – the 8-year old Emma Bahyan and the 12 year-old Ofelya Avetisyan are among the winners. The girls received USD50 prize money each and their school received USD100. The post cards are now printed and the calendar will be printed soon.
In Armenia, WFP has been implementing a school-feeding project since last year. The benefiting schools are in the four most vulnerable marzes in Armenia -Shirak, Syunik, Gegharkunik and Tavush. To date, WFP has provided 360 tons of food for 10,700 children in 86 schools.
