Argentine-Armenian David Nalbandian looked to regain his winning ways mostly missing since his career-best performance at this year’s Wimbledon as he entered the Tennis Masters Series (TMS) in Madrid last week.

Forty-eight players competed for $2,950,000 prize money.

After two poor performances in Moscow and Vienna as a result of which he moved down from 14th place to 19th in ATP rankings Nalbandian rallied in Madrid to beat countryman Guillermo Canas (ranked 13) 4-6, 6-3, 6-3.

But his victory over Canas apparently took too much out of Nalbandian, as he went down 0-6, 2-6 to 46-ranked Fabrice Santoro of France in the third round.

Nalbandian earned $30,800 and regained three positions, moving to 16th place in the ATP standings.

As the ATP season nears an end and players are eager to earn as many points as possible, Nalbandian immediately took his game to Basel for the Davidoff Swiss Indoor tournament where he scored a first-round victory over Olivier Mutis of France, 7-6 (3), 1-0 (forfeit).

In the second round Nalbandian defeated fellow-countryman Augustine Calleri 6-2, 3-0 (forfeit) to face Tim Henman of Great Britain in the quarterfinals.

Competition will conclude this weekend.

Meanwhile Sargis Sargsyan, after a break from the US Open (where he defeated Nalbandian), resumed competition in International Series Competition in St. Petersburg.

In the first round Sargsyan (ranked 85) met Sebastian Grosjean of France, who had beaten Sargsyan earlier this year (3-6, 6-3, 6-3) in series competition in the US. The Frenchman again dispatched the Armenian, 6-4, 6-4.
