azg: ARMENIAN WINS 2-ND PLACE IN VIOLIN CONTEST

An ex-resident of Yerevan, now living in Frankfurt am Maine, 17 year-old Sergey Khachatrian won the silver medal in the International Violin Contest held in Indianapolis, USA, on September 6 to 22. The young Armenian violinist received 15.000 USD prize fixed for the second place, and thrice enjoyed the special encouragement of the jury.

‘Apart form the prize, I especially value the attitude of audience who received me with warmth’,- said Sergey in the phone interview given to daily Azg. ‘I would naturally want to win the first place, but when on the stage I forget all about places and try to solve the ‘musical task’ set in front of me’,- added Sergey.

The Indianapolis International Violinists’ Contest is held every four years and lasts for 17 days. It hosts young violinists aging from 16 to 29 from all over the world, the selection process of which is quite tough. The chairman of the contest’s jury, eminent Bolivian virtuoso violinist and conductor Jamy Laredo, demands from the jury a thorough and strict evaluation of candidates who should participate in the competition. This year out of 200 applicants only 52 have been chosen to participate in the contest, which is, by the way, the single one of its kind in the Northern America.

According to Chicago Tribune this competition has quite a high prestige and the prize-holders of the contest get a right to perform on the leading stages of the world. The gold medal winner of the contest, Hungarian Barnabas Keleman, received a 30,000 USD prize, a 24 karat gold ring and a ‘Stradivarius Violin’ given to him for a four-year period.
