Catholicos Karekin II, head of the Armenian Apostolic Church, welcomed today at his residence in Echmiadzin, some 20 km off the capital Yerevan ex-Russian president Boris Yeltsin, who has arrived in Armenia together with his wife Naina on a week-long vacation at the invitation of president Kocharian.
“Armenians have exceptionally warm feelings towards Russians and realize the important role you played in the building of new times,” Karekin II said welcoming Yeltsin and his spouse.
Yeltsin said regretfully he did not have time before to visit Armenia. “It is my fault that I am coming for Armenia for the first time, to a country in which the Church has big power,” he said.
Their conversation was centered on problems the sister Churches in Armenia and Russia have been facing since the collapse of the Soviet Union. Ex-Russian president was interested in various questions related to Armenian Church. For his part Karekin II mentioned the brotherly relationship between Armenian and Russian Orthodox churches, and also referred to his meeting with the Muslim leader of Azerbaijan in a bid to facilitate Karabagh regulation that took place in Moscow with the mediation of Russian Patriarch Alexiy II.
Karekin II presented to Yeltsin a special medal dedicated to 17 centuries of Armenia’s conversion to Christianity and an illustrated album.
