YEREVAN, SEPTEMBER 25, ARMENPRESS: A conference dedicated to the 1,000th Anniversary Celebration of the Consecration of the Cathedral of Ani, presided by His Holiness Karekin II, Supreme Patriarch and Catholicos of All Armenians, ended on Tuesday in the Armenian capital, with a call on the Turkish and Armenian governments to seek ways to help restore and maintain thousands Armenian cultural monuments in the Territory of Turkey.
The conference titled “The Glory of Ani” was organized under the auspices of His Holiness and the initiative of the “St. Mesrop Mashtots” Scientific and Cultural Center of Oshakan, in the Diocese of Aragatsotn.
The statement calls for designing joint programs for deciding the status and the amount of repair works and other related issues to restore historical Armenian monuments. It also calls for setting punishment boundaries for destroying or vandalizing these monuments.
The statement says that the repair of Ani is not possible without active involvement of Armenian experts and specialists. It also suggests that the town of Ani be declared as a museum-reservation zone.
The statement expresses hope that the government of Turkey will respond, which it says, will be another step for developing cultural cooperation between the two neighbor nations.
