YEREVAN, SEPTEMBER 4, ARMENPRESS: The UNHCR Yerevan office said that some 4,713 Armenian nationals asked for asylum in foreign countries in the first six months of the year. the number of application in the first quarter was 2,496 and 2,217 in the second quarter.

Emil Sahakian, an aide to UNHCR said the majority of Armenian asylum seekers now choose Austria as their final destination. About 690 application were submitted to that country’s immigration offices in the mentioned period, applications seeking asylum in the USA were 317, 219 applications were submitted to Germany and 88 applications to Denmark.

Sahakian said 95 percent of applications are rejected, as only few Armenian refugees comply with requirements to be granted asylum.

In terms of the number of applications, seeking asylum in 29 developed countries, Armenia comes the 17-th among other 40 nations, neighboring Azerbaijan is the 35-th.
