Yerevan, September 4, 2002. (CNA). Ensuring modern standards of security in running the Armenian atomic power plant, which is located in seismic zone, is the Armenian government’s priority task. Armenian Prime Minister Andranik Margarian stated it in his speech in Johannesburg at the World Summit on Sustainable Development. In his words, they have to solve problems of ecological security simultaneously guaranteeing the energetic security of the country. At the same time the Armenian Prime Minister emphasized that the negotiations on securing the nuclear plant and attracting financial resources to create adequate alternative energy resources do not arouse particular optimism. The EU is ready to allocate only 100 million US dollars, which in the minister’s words, is not enough for solving the existing problems. The Armenian government cannot be expected to have the necessary means to close the plant within the short-term outlook – 1.5 billion dollars are necessary for that. Andranik Margarian also reported that a forum with the participation of donor countries, international financial organizations and private investors would be held at the turn of the year aiming at raising funds to solve the problems of the energetic field in Armenia, Panarmenia.net reports
