Argentina’s surprise Wimbledon finalist David Nalbandian
was ousted in the first round of the US Open here on Wednesday by Armenia’s
Sargsian needed only 99 minutes to advance 6-1, 6-4, 6-4 against the
20-year-old, who took the junior title here in 1998. He fired 12 aces and 44
winners past the 16th seed, who committed 43 unforced errors and managed only
one break point against his rival, which he could not convert.
The 29-year-old Armenian, whose best performance here was two third round
appearances in 1995 and 1997, will next face either Germany’s Alexander Popp or
Sweden’s Andreas Vinciguerra.
