Toronto auteur Atom Egoyan’s controversial Ararat, starring Charles
Aznavour, Arsinee Khanjian and Marie-Jose Croze, will screen at the
Festival of New Film and New Media, Oct. 10-20, organizers announced
yesterday.
In a break with a 30-year tradition that held festival entries a close
secret, co-founder Claude Chamberlan confirmed that Egoyan’s oblique
investigation of the Armenian genocide will join the 2002 Cannes Film
Festival favourite Le Fils by Belgium’s Jean-Pierre and Luc Dardenne
on this year’s roster. Le Fils actor Olivier Gourmet won best actor
at Cannes this year.
Also announced, Etre et Avoir, an acclaimed French documentary directed
by Nicolas Philibert about the vanishing tradition of the one-room
school house in that country. The 31st edition’s full schedule will
be announced in late September.
