YEREVAN, AUGUST 9, ARMENPRESS: Armenian deputy environment minister Artashes Ziroyan told Thursday that the level of Lake Sevan, which is of vital importance for Armenia’s ecological balance and agriculture, has gone up by 36 centimeters over the past year.
According to Ziroyan, the lake has already received this year some 236 million cubic meters of water, by 26 million more than last year. After the reconstruction of the Vorotan tunnel is over, which the deputy minister said, may take place in 2003, the Lake will receive another 65 million cubic meters of vital water annually, this will result in annual increase of the level between 15 to 20 centimeters.
This year only 30 million cubic meters of water have been pumped out from the Lake for irrigation and energy generation purposes, down from 113 million cubic meters used during the same period in 2001.
