Freedom and justice, the main postulates of democracy, are unattainable in
Armenia without religious tolerance, the participants of the round-table
“Public for Democracy” said today.
They stressed the special role of Armenia and, particularly, of the
Armenian
Apostolic Church in the world system of religion. It was noted that if
there
was no traditionally Christian Armenia in the region, the region’s
countries
would be more Asia-oriented.
The participants in the round-table criticized the Armenian Church for
censuring sects more actively than atheists, who, in fact, deny God’s
existence. It was also noted that the post-Soviet persecution of sects is
connected with the strengthening of the State-Church relationship.
