YEREVAN, JULY 17, ARMENPRESS: A well-known French Armenian mathematician, historian and art critic Claude Armen Mutafian was awarded Doctor of History title for conducting a comprehensive study of the Diplomacy of the Armenian Kingdom of Cilicia during the period of Crusaders.
The study was coordinated by a Sorbonne professor Michel Palard. Speaking at the awarding ceremony Mutafian explained that his first interest towards the mediaeval Armenian kingdom of Cilicia that had been keeping close contacts with Europe and especially with France, arouse when he first visited Cilicia (now in south-western Turkey). Following that visit Mutafian authored a book, which he called ‘Cilicia on the Crossroads of Empires’, that was published in Paris. He then organized two Cilicia-devoted exhibitions in Paris and Vatican.
Mutafian’s latest work encompasses almost all aspects of the three-century long history of diplomacy of the Armenian kingdom.
Mutafian is a member of the Armenian Academy of Sciences, an honorary doctor of Yerevan State University. He is the son of a well-known painter Zareh Mutafian. He worked in USA, Cuba, Mexico and Armenia and was an active participant of festive events devoted to an anniversary of famous Armenian sea-painter Ivan Ayvazovsky in the Crimea.
