ISTANBUL (A.A) – 26.06.2002 – Armenian Foreign Minister Vartan Oskanyan said on Wednesday that they wanted full diplomatic relations with Turkey without putting forward any precondition, and claimed that relations between the two countries were captured by Azerbaijan.
Addressing a conference held in Istanbul by TESEV, Oskanyan said, ”we are not the only two neighboring countries in the world having problematic relations in the past,” and noted that Agri and Turkey were only 45 miles away from his office in Foreign Ministry.
Oskanyan said, ”however, we can not go there. Agri symbolizes both the pride and disappointment of us. Agri is a reminding symbol of Turkish-Armenian relations and its history.”
Oskanyan said Turkish and Armenian people should pay reciprocal visits within the framework of equal and sovereign identities, make trade and talk, adding that, ”this is valid for all our neighbors. It is not up to Armenia’s responsibility to judge relations between Turkey and Azerbaijan. However, this also can not be a means to exclude others for the interest of a third side. We may not like close relations between two countries, we may not appreciate the meaning of this relationship to our security. However, we are ready for dialogue, diplomatic relations and open official sovereign communication.”
