azg: MEDALS TO DIASPORA-ARMENIAN WRITERS

The First Pan-Armenian Writer’s Conference which kicked off June 16 continued its works yesterday, June 18.

About 50 writers from 15 countries of the world, as well as local Armenian writers discussed homeland-Diaspora literary and cultural ties in Tsakhkadzor resort town of Armenia – at the ‘Writer’s House’ hotel. Armenian foreign minister Vartan Oskanian, culture minister Roland Sharoyan, science and education minister Levon Mkrtchian and the executive director of ‘Hayastan’ Pan-Armenian Fund Vahan Ter-Ghevondian also participated in the works of the conference, each correspondingly delivering reports on foreign policy, cultural ties, situation in the education sector and plans of the ‘Hayastan’ fund.

Culture minister Roland Sharoyan said that hereafter the culture ministry will award writers with gold and silver medals for notable contribution to the development of national literary heritage. On the same day Diasporan writers Zahrat, Mesrop Ashchian, Robert Hattechian, Pepo Simonian, editor Poghos Snapian, literary critic Sargis Kirakosian, publisher Toros Toranian, dramatist Hrant Margarian and poet Azat Matian were awarded with the medals for their ‘big contribution to Armenian literary and public life’.

Today, June 20, the writers will visit the Armenian Genocide memorial and Genocide Museum, will plant trees on the Tsitsernakaberd hill and will later head for Oshakan village to participate in the cultural event dedicated to the day of Mesrop Mashtots (founder of Armenian alphabet in 405 AD) and Sahak Partev (Catholicos of Armenia in 5-th century, who played a crucial role in creation of Armenian alphabet).
