NEW YORK (Reuters) – A man who entered the parish of St. Patrick’s Cathedral, asked for a priest and then shot himself in the head last week has died from his injuries, a hospital spokeswoman said on Sunday.
Arsen Gazaryan, 24, an immigrant from Armenia who arrived in the United States seven years ago, died on Friday at New York Presbyterian Weill Cornell Medical Center. He had been in extremely critical condition since the shooting.
Gazaryan entered St. Patrick’s rectory on April 3 and, after asking to see a priest, handed a note to Father Michael Rajendran. After telling the priest he was depressed and didn’t want to live anymore, he shot himself in the face. Rajendran was not injured.
Police said Gazaryan’s note indicated he wanted to be buried in an Armenian cemetery.
