His Beatitude Patriarch Mesrob II of Istanbul and All Turkey paid a two-day visit to Gibraltar, where he attended the enthronement ceremonies of His Grace Geoffrey Rowell, Anglican Bishop of Gibraltar in Europe.
The Patriarch arrived at Gibraltar airport on Wednesday 31 October,
accompanied by the Revd Archdeacon Hratch Tchilingirian, where he was greeted by His Grace Bishop Rowell and representatives of the Governor of Gibraltar. The same afternoon, His Beatitude attended an organ recital in the Anglican Cathedral of the Holy Trinity.
On Thursday 1 November, on All Saints’ Day, Patriarch Mesrob attended the enthronement service of the new Anglican Bishop of Gibraltar, which was followed by the celebration of the Holy Eucharist. A reception followed in the Garrison Library. Their Eminences Archbishop Gregorios of Thyateira (representing His Holiness Bartholomew I, Greek Archbishop of Constantinople and Ecumenical Patriarch) and Archbishop Vosskan of the Armenians of Athens (representing His Holiness Karekin II, Supreme Patriarch and Catholicos of All Armenians) and His Excellency Mons. Charles Caruana, Roman Catholic Bishop of Gibraltar, were amongst the ecumenical guests who attended the celebration.
The Diocese of Europe is the largest Anglican diocese in the world extending from the Canary Islands in the West to Ulan Batur in Central Asia in the East, covering over 250 Anglican parishes.
On Friday 2 November, Patriach Mesrob paid a courtesy visit to His
Excellency the Roman Catholic Bishop of Gibraltar in his office at the Catholic Cathedral of St. Mary the Crowned.
While in Gibraltar, Patriarch Mesrob was graciously hosted at the Convent, the official residence of His Excellency the Governor & Commander-in Chief of Gibraltar and Mrs. David Durie. His Beatitude was also treated a tour of Gibraltar having ample time to visit the Barbary apes roaming free on the Rock, St Michael’s Cave, the Ibrahim-Al-Ibrahim Mosque, the Europa Point, the Irish Village and some art galleries.
Patriarch Mesrob and Deacon Hratch took leave of their friends in Gibraltar on Friday, 2 November, at 12:00 hours.
