TURKEY AGREED TO ESTABLISH ARMENIAN-TURKISH RECONCILIATION COMMISSION BEING AFRAID OF INTERNATIONAL COMMUNITY’S PRESSURE

Turkey agreed to establish the Armenian-Turkish
Reconciliation Commission being afraid of the international
community’s pressure, the member of the commission, well-known
Russian politologist Andranik Mihranyan told Arminfo.

He said an
opinion that the commission’s activities will prevent the U.S.
Congress from recognizing the “so-called”(HyeTert) Genocide of Armenians in the Ottoman
Turkey in 1915 is simply “stupidity and dilettantism.” The
politologist pointed out that the commission’s work does not prevent
from discussion of issues, which are important for Armenia. Mihranyan
believes that at the present international situation caused by Sept
11 terrorist acts no one will rise this question in the Congress.
“Turkey again has become a key country for implementation of the
USA’s strategic interests in the Near-East,” the politologist said.
Mihranyan said the commission’s activities are aimed at finding out
possibilities for reaching compromises and agreements, as well as
each side’s readiness for it. Speaking about a forthcoming session of
the commission to be held in New-York in November 2001, Mihranyan
pointed out that, mainly, legal aspects of the Armenia-Turkey
relations are supposed to be discussed there. Subcommittees, which
will include experts who are of different opinions about the “so-called”(HyeTert) Genocide
of Armenians of 1915, are likely to be established in the commission.
