Armenian court acquits Jehovah’s Witness leader.

The OSCE Yerevan representative office today
welcomed the verdict by the first instance court of Armavir community
under which Levon Markaryan, accused of organizing the unauthorized
religious group Jehovah’s Witness, was found not guilty.

As the OSCE Yerevan representative office has told Mediamax news agency,
the not guilty verdict for Levon Markaryan shows that “the court system
is carrying out its commitments on the protection of freedom of
conscience and religion in Armenia, and this is worthy of praise”.

Simultaneously, the OSCE Yerevan representative office expressed regret
that criminal charges had been brought against Levon Markaryan. “We hope
that the decision by the government, parliament and Armenian
Constitutional Court to make constitutional amendments and adopt a new
law on alternative military service, will bring to an end the practice
of instituting similar criminal cases,” the OSCE Yerevan representative
office told Mediamax news agency.
