August 18, 2001 – Yerevan, Armenia.
Over 2000 participants from 30 countries have been pouring through Zvartnots airport over the last few days filling Yerevan with a festive air of competitive spirit. They have come to celebrate Armenian youth and sports in the Second Pan-Armenian Games. The symbolic torch of this international event was carried by 50 athletes and a full security escort from the ancient temple of Garni, through Republic Square in the heart of the Capital city, then on to it’s final destination in “Vazgen Sarkissian” stadium. A gala opening ceremony filled with speeches, songs and dance conveying the message of international friendship was capped with a spectacular pyrotechnic presentation that lit up the sky. The flame will shine over the games until August 26, 2001, (The Closing Ceremony) where new old friends will say good-bye and leave with memories that will last a lifetime.
