YEREVAN (combined sources)–Archbishop Tiran Giureghian, primate of the Novo-Nakhichevan and Russian diocese of the Armenian Apostolic Church has been excommunicated by His Holiness Karekin II, Catholicos of All Armenians. The former primate has been ordered to use his birth-name Ghazaros Giureghian. According to Istanbul’s Marmara Newspaper, Patriarch Archbishop Mesrob Mutafyan was informed of this development by Karekin II, who is currently touring North America.
Moscow’s Armenian community has reportedly split into two parts, some of its members supporting Karekin II’s decision, while others decisively opposing it.
Patriarch Mutafyan has stated that such matters traditionally are reviewed at Bishops’ Meetings held by the Armenian Apostolic Church. Mutafyan hopes that the issue will be touched upon at an appropriate forum in the near future.
