Some 58 kg and 886 g of drugs were confiscated in Armenia in 2000 compared with 49 kg and 213 g in 1999, the Armenian Interior Ministry’s public and press relations department told reporters.
Thirty nine criminal groups involved in drug trafficking were identified in the republic last year as against 32 groups in 1999. Some 483 crimes linked with illegal drug trafficking were registered under Article 229 of the Criminal Code (illegal production, purchase, possession, use and sale of narcotic drugs). The number of crimes in this category in 1999 were 480.
Meanwhile, a survey carried out in March-May 2000 under the name of “Supporting the national strategic planning against HIV/AIDS in Armenia” showed that the number of drug addicts in Yerevan alone varies between 19,000 to 23,000 and 10 per cent of them are intravenous drug users.
Some experts say that these figures show the rising level of crime and not the effectiveness of the campaign against drug trafficking in Armenia.
