Announcement by the Embassy of the Republic of Azerbaijan

You can find the whole announcement below

The Turkish Daily News, one of the Turkish media’s most well-respected papers published an article by a leading journalist Mehmet Ali Birand in its Feb. 2 edition. The Embassy of the Republic of Azerbaijan strongly condemns the article in question as Armenian propaganda and would like to make the following points known:

When Mr. Birand was interviewing Kocharyan, we watched in hope and anticipation he was going to ask the President of Armenia why he was continuing a policy of occupation, why he has not withdrawn from Azerbaijan soil and why he has turned Armenia into a giant arsenal. Unfortunately, Mr. Birand asked no such questions. Now, it is with regret that we have to say that the Posta and Turkish Daily News papers together with CNN Turk have not refrained from making pro-Armenian propaganda. The Armenians used to carry out armed terrorism against Turkey but now they prefer the terrorism of propaganda, and they are using Mehmet Ali Birand as the vehicle to do all this.

We would like to point out certain important points to your esteemed columnist. To begin with, there can be no distinction between Armenians and Armenian diaspora. They are one and the same, always together and always acting in perfect coordination. They have been working together against Azerbaijan not for the last 10 years or so, but throughout history. Apart from this, the state and government of Turkey have shown Armenia more than enough common sense and have extended the hand of aid to Armenia. Was it not Turkey that opened a humanitarian aid air corridor and which sends tons of food and medicines to Armenia? In response to this Armenia has not removed the article from its Constitution officially recognizing a genocide took place. It has not refrained from working with NGOs and other associations at international platforms in jointly accusing Turkey, smearing her and making Turks out to be a race of barbarians. It has not lifted a finger to stop the Armenian genocide bill being reviewed by the U.S. Congress. It has not withdrawn from Azerbaijan soil nor has it apologized. Most importantly, Armenia has not dismantled the S-300 missiles it bought from Russia and which are aimed at Turkish cities — a fact we believe no Turkish citizen, let alone a newspaper journalist, should forget. It is with regret that we as the representatives of a fraternal country watch how accusing Turkish policies has become quite fashionable.

We believe that Turkey pursued the correct policy and that as a result 1 million Armenian militarists and chauvinists left Armenia. Turkey has always been well-intentioned, but Armenia has never responded in kind. The Armenians are constantly hostile to Turkey and will persist with their ugly business until they get their way. What is really saddening about the situation is that certain circles in Turkey still do not appear to understand what is going on. What can their aims be, we wonder, when they constantly say Armenia was right, Turkey made a mistake, that Turkey is guilty and that it should change its attitude? If their aim is to belittle Turkey and to make Turkey out to be weak and an embarrassment to the Turkic World, then we think they have achieved their aim all too well.

We present our respects to the Turkish Daily News and hope that this announcement will be published in its pages.
