Washington, D.C. – As the United Nations observes December 10 as Human Rights Day, the Armenian Assembly of America strongly urges the international community to speak out and to do everything in its power to stop the atrocities being committed against the Armenian people and to hold the perpetrators accountable.
On this milestone day, as thousands remain without food or electricity in Artsakh as a result of the six-week war launched by Azerbaijan with the full support of Turkey, including the importation of foreign mercenaries, the autocratic leaders of Turkey and Azerbaijan conducted a full-scale military parade celebrating their brutal war against the Armenian people, with Aliyev claiming that Armenia itself is part of Azerbaijan. The Armenian Assembly urges the international community and organizations to take a firm stand against Azerbaijan’s human rights abuses and ongoing campaign of cultural genocide.
Azerbaijan’s aggressive campaign of ethnic cleansing against the Armenians of Nagorno-Karabakh, implemented on September 27, includes graphic video images of decapitated and mutilated soldiers at the hands of the Azerbaijani army. These disturbing images and video footage of human rights violations that have gone unpunished, is being catalogued by Columbia University’s Institute for the Study of Human Rights.
“We remain deeply troubled by the ongoing reports about the horrific human rights atrocities being committed against the Armenian people,” said Bryan Ardouny, Assembly Executive Director. “We urge the international community to strongly condemn these heinous acts and hold those who committed them accountable.”
This year’s UN Human Rights Day theme and call to action, “Stand Up for Human Rights,” seeks to create a more just society with equal opportunities for all. The United Nations General Assembly adopted the Universal Declaration of Human Rights in 1948 and Human Rights Day has been observed by the international community for the last 72 years.
