Armenian doctor released from custody in Russia is convinced he is innocent

Armenian physician Gevorg Stepanyan, who was arrested in Russia, was released several days ago, and on a signature bond to not leave the country.

He thanked—in a video message—all those who supported him.

In his message, Stepanyan noted that even though the prison conditions were quite hard and he has gone through a rather difficult path, the hard work is still ahead.

“We still have a fight at the courts, [but] I’m more than convinced that justice is on my side,” he stated, in particular. “I’m more than convinced that I’m innocent.”

Gevorg Stepanyan was in a prison in Moscow, and he was arrested on charges of medical malpractice.

His attorneys argue, however, that the health of a patient had been put at risk due to negligence by some other doctors.

Thanks to the efforts of the Armenian embassy in Russia, Stepanyan’s arrest order was commuted to being released on a signature bond.
