Democracy Index: Notable improvements registered in Armenia

Armenia saw the most improvement in democracy score among all “hybrid regime” countries in eastern Europe in 2018, says the Democracy Index 2018 published by the Economist Intelligence Unit.

Armenia raised its score to 4.79, from 4.11 in 2017 and jumped in its ranking from 111 to 103.

According to the report, democracy stopped declining in 2018. The index rates 167 countries by 60 indicators across five broad categories: electoral process and pluralism, the functioning of government, political participation, democratic political culture and civil liberties. It is stricter than most similar indices: it concludes that just 4.5% of the world’s people live in a “full democracy”. However, the overall global score remained stable in 2018 for the first time in three years.

Neighboring Georgia (89) and Turkey (110) are also included in the same group of “hybrid regimes”. Azerbaijan (149) and Russia (144) are listed among “authoritarian regimes”.
