Armenia elects first female mayor

Diana Gasparyan has been elected Mayor of the Armenian town of Etchmiadzin at snap elections held on Sunday, Sipan Pashinyan, an official at the Ministry of Territorial Administration and Development, said on Facebook.

Nominated by the Civil Contract party led by acting PM Nikol Pashinyan, Gasparyan has won the mayoral elections with 8, 076 votes to become the first woman mayor in the history of Armenia, the official wrote.

12 candidates competed for the mayor’s post. The voter turnout is put at 15,827 (out of 45,278 eligible voters) at Sunday’s early elections.
