Armenia to veto Azerbaijan’s possible membership to CSTO – MFA spox

The process initiated by Armenia to replace the secretary general of the Russia-led Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO) has been followed by a series of discussions at various platforms of the organization, which are aimed at finding consensus solutions, acting spokesperson of the Armenian Foreign Ministry Anna Naghdalyan told reporters on Tuesday.

“In September 2015, the six member states adopted a decision based on consensus at the CSTO summit, according to which the member states can assume the office of the organization’s secretary general by rotation in the Russian alphabetical order. Based on this procedure, Armenia has fixed its position as the CSTO chief for a three-year term. Armenia has respectively offered its candidate,” she detailed.

Asked whether Armenia has no longer right to preside over the organization or whether the country insists that its representative head the structure, the spokesperson once again stated the decision to nominate a candidate for the secretary general has been adopted by a consensus, refusing to further comment on the issue before the CSTO adopts a final decision.

In response to the question over Armenia’s stance on Azerbaijan’s possible membership to the organization, Naghdalyan stressed Yerevan will make use of its right to veto if Azerbaijan unveils such plans.

Asked by Panorama.am that since Yuri Khachaturov’s three-year term as the CSTO Secretary General has not expired, is another Armenian candidate likely to head the organization, the spokesperson said: “I repeat myself that we have launched a process of replacing the CSTO secretary general. The possible developments will become clear as a result of consultations. They will be approved by the CSTO Security Council. Before that, it is not possible to provide further information.”
