Pashinyan specifies his stance on scandal over Catholicos and voices dissatisfaction at police conduct

YEREVAN, July 16. /ARKA/. Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan, answering Sunday the questions people put to him in Facebook, spoke also about imbroglio over Catholicos Garegin II, the Armenian Apostolic Church leader.

On Saturday in Vayots Dzor province, “New Armenia – New Catholicos” movement activists surrounded a car with Garegin II in it, blocked it and demanded his resignation.

Pashinyan said he has instructed the police to scrutinize the incident in Vayots Dzor.

“If the boundaries of the allowable are crossed, appropriate steps should be taken,” he said. “The government should not interfere in things inside the Church. But when I listen to representatives of the Church I understand that they only add fuel to the flame.”

Nevertheless, in his opinion, the matter has not still become public and there is no need for expressing the government’s stance.

“The executive institution will only ensure maintenance of legality,” Pashinyan said.

The police should fulfill their duties to shield the atmosphere of love and solidarity from being undermined.

“The police have already interfered once to vacate the occupied territories in Mother See of Holy Echmiadzin and will interfere again,” he said. “I am unhappy about the police’s conduct in Vayots Dzor. I urge clerics to gather and discuss these issues.”

The prime minister said he is not an expert in this area, and therefore he can be mistaken.

”But it is unacceptable to resort to instigations,” he said. “If things is going on this way we will have to scrutinize things more closely, and at some moment, give clear answers to these questions and make proposals.”

Protests are being staged in Armenia to force Catholicos Garegin II to resign.
