The culmination of the ACYO Sports Weekend was the celebration of the Divine Liturgy at St. Paul Armenian Church on Sunday, May 24, the Feast of the Pentecost, where hundreds of faithful, joined clergy and the participants in this year’s sports weekend in fellowship and prayer.
The Diocesan Primate Archbishop Hovnan Derderian, was the day’s celebrant and homilist. His Eminence was assisted at the Holy Altar by the Rev. Fr. Avedis Abovian and the Rev. Fr. Mesrop Ash. The pastor of the host parish the Rev. Fr. Yessai Bedros participated in the service.
His Eminence reflected on the importance of the Feast of the Pentecost as the birth of the Church. Archbishop Derderian quoted the Words of our Lord from the Gospel according to St. John the Evangelist “The Counselor, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, he will teach you all things and bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you” (John 14:26).
“Pentecost is the holy day when we celebrate the descent of the Holy Spirit in our spirituality. Enriched with divine gifts, we ought to share those gifts with our fellow brothers and sisters, friends and the members of our families,” said Abp. Derderian.
In his second message to the congregation, the Primate noted the importance of the Orthodox Faith and the Apostolic succession. “The Almighty God, sent into the world His Only Begotten Son, our Lord Jesus Christ who in turn sent His disciples calling them the light of the world. Beloved faithful, each of us is called to spread the light of the Gospel of Christ within our community. Let us take heed of the Word of God, the teachings of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, and the sacred traditions of our church,” he said.
During the service, Archbishop Derderian ordained Ari Adams and Hayk Boyadjian as Sub-deacons and granted four minor orders of acolyte to Tigran Iskenyan. He congratulated the altar servers calling upon them to serve Christ and the Armenian Apostolic Church with a renewed sense of zeal and dedication.
Also during the service the Primate honored Deacon Steve Adams, Deacon Yeghia Allan Jendian and the organist of St. Paul Mr. Ben Krikorian for their valuable services rendered to St. Paul Armenian Church of Fresno and the Western Diocese alike. The Primate congratulated the honorees conveying to them his genuine pastoral wishes.
