Shahan Arzruni just released a new CD, featuring piano music by Komitas’ contemporaries.

“Hommage” is a collection of short pieces by Armenian composers born in the 19th century at a time when western music was introduced to Armenian culture.

Tchouhadjian was the composer who created the first opera in the Middle East; Spendiaryan introduced the orchestra to national music; Manas harmonized and orchestrated the national anthem of the Turkish Republic; Yekmalian studied with Rimsky Korsakov; Ghorghanian set Tolstoy’s text to music; Mikuli was Chopin’s protégé; Elmas played for Liszt. Although evocative of an elder age, “Hommage” is vibrant with the pulse of the new world.
