Walking for Armenia – 1000 Kilometres Walk

In memory of all those who died during the Great Massacre of the Armenians in 1915. With the blessing of His Holiness Aram I, Catholicos of Cilicia… Father and Daughter will walk 1000 Kilometres to trace the route their forefathers took 100 years ago during the Great Genocide of the Armenians in 1915. Vartan and his daughter will start the 1000 kilometres walk at the city of Van in former Armenian (now northern Turkey). The route-reconnaissance will start in February 2015.

Vartan Melkonian is a composer and conductor of classical music, working chiefly with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra.  He is also the Patron of the Consortium for Street Children.  In his capacity as Humanitarian Ambassador, he speaks at the United Nations and at the All-Party Parliamentary Group in the House of Commons on matters of Street Children. Despite his achievements, he was brought up at the Birds’ Nest Orphanage in Byblos Lebanon in the 1950s and spent his formative years scouring the slums of Beirut.
His daughter, Veronica-Haiganoush, is a university student in UK, studying towards a degree in Economics.  She has just finished her one-year internship at Ernst Young in London.
Vartan and his daughter will start the 1000 kilometres walk at the city of Van in former Armenian (now northern Turkey). The route-reconnaissance will start in February 2015.
