Celebrate the Legacy of Archbishop Manoogian

As Primate of the Eastern Diocese for a quarter of a century, he was our most important and visible figure: the vigorous, compassionate, always impressive face of the Armenian Church of America—familiar to thousands of people across this country. He was a man of towering stature among New York City’s faith and ethnic communities: a fixture in the city’s ecumenical and interfaith circles throughout the 1970s and ‘80s, who built enduring relationships with the political and religious leaders of the day.

Eventually, he departed our Diocese to become the Armenian Patriarch of Jerusalem. But the legacy of Archbishop Torkom Manoogian would endure among us—and continues to inspire even after his death in October of 2012.
Torkom Srpazan will always be celebrated as a beautiful, poetic voice of our people, advocating for our national aspirations, while embodying the great Armenian civilization that has bestowed works of profound art and spirituality on world culture.
The Eastern Diocese is hosting a special celebration of this remarkable life and legacy on Sunday, February 9, at New York’s St. Vartan Armenian Cathedral and Diocesan Complex.
The day will begin with the Divine Liturgy, celebrated by our current Primate, Archbishop Khajag Barsamian. A luncheon and program devoted to Archbishop Torkom’s legacy, titled “Patriarch, Primate, and Poet,” will begin at 1 p.m. in Haik and Alice Kavookjian Auditorium.
The public is cordially invited to join in this celebratory occasion. Reservations are now being taken for the luncheon, with a deadline of February 2. Click here to view a flyer with reservation information.
