Safarov Scandal: Our next step

By Aram Hamparian

Dear Friend, Aliyev was as serious as a heart attack when he uttered the hateful words: “Our main enemies are the Armenians of the world.” Help us stand up to Aliyev’s threats by turning American condemnation into concrete action: Cut off all U.S. military aid and sales to Azerbaijan! Call and write Congress today! American taxpayers shouldn’t subsidize Azerbaijan’s aggression, and U.S. arms should never be used to attack Armenians!

Since the Safarov scandal broke last Friday, Armenians worldwide have taken to the streets, the internet, and the corridors of power to protest this grave human injustice and threat to peace.
But we’ve got much more to do!
Because you raised your voice, our State Department and the President himself criticized Budapest’s shameless extradition and Baku’s pardon, praise, and promotion of Ramil Safarov. The OSCE has spoken against this outrage, as has the National Council of Churches, and many of our own Members of Congress, from both parties.
Now they must turn their words into concrete action.
Today, as you read this note, Safarov, an unrepentant axe-murderer, is being honored by Azerbaijan’s President Ilham Aliyev for the cowardly act of hacking to death an innocent man, Gurgen Margaryan, as he slept, for no other reason than being Armenian.
