YEREVAN, OCTOBER 27, ARMENPRESS: Prime minister Andranik Margarian and other high-ranking government officials paid tribute today to the memory of eight government and parliament members assassinated in the assault on the Armenian parliament seven years ago.
They visited the Yerablur cemetery where former prime minister Vazgen Sarkisian, killed in the attack, rests and laid flowers to his grave. In another ceremony members of the Armenian parliament laid flowers to a monument in the parliament yard to remember senior parliament and government members killed in the 1999 October 27 attack on the National Assembly.
Speaking at the ceremony the country’s top legislator, Tigran Torosian said that the killed colleagues will remain in people’s hearts and souls. The Armenian parliament was attacked on October 27, 1999 by a group of armed men led by Nairi Hunanian. They killed seven top officials and took dozens of government members and parliamentarians hostage before surrendering to law-enforcement agencies the following morning.
After a lengthy trial they were sentenced to life imprisonment in December 2003.
