ARMENIA IS IN THE 101ST PLACE IN THE LIST OF FREEDOM OF SPEECH

According to the data of the organization “Reporters sans frontiers,” there has been significant regress in freedom of speech and _expression in Armenia over the recent years.

For instance, in 2003 – 2004 Armenia was in the 90th place but last year Armenia appeared in the 102nd place. Thus, the regress is obvious.

This year Armenia is in the 101st place in the list of freedom of speech introduced by the organization “Reporters sans frontiers.”

The list covers the names of 107 countries and Armenia comes after Georgia and Turkey. The latter has brought a number of actions against reporters over the past two years and has been criticized by the European structures, and yet, regardless of this fact, Turkey is above Armenia in the list.

The organization calls on the reporters, experts and foreign mass media working in Armenia to point out the violations and restrictions applied against freedom of speech since last September.

Elza Vidal, head of the Department dealing with the issues of European and CIS countries, claims that Armenian reporters have registered multiple suchlike cases; “two journalists were threatened and five reporters were attacked. Besides, there is apparent self-censorship in private mass media, and state censorship in state media. Some Websites are also subjected to censorship according to our data.”

Asked the question whether we can say that “ freedom of speech has improved in Armenia in 2006,” Elza Vidal answered, “We can hardly speak of progress, as the classification is very changeable.”
