MADE IN ARMENIA: ELECTRONIC CHIPS OF 70% OF MOBILE PHONES IN THE WORLD

Yerevan, September 22. ArmInfo. The electronic chips of 70% of mobile phones in the world are made in Armenia, says the executive director of the Synopsis Armenia company Hovik Musayelyan.

Our people do not know about it and consequently do not value it – they don’t value the contribution our specialists are making in the exploration of space and the design of satellites.

Musayelyan says that according to unofficial sources over $1 bln have been invested in Armenian IT in the last two years. Synopsys Armenia alone invested $400 mln in technology and education. Other investors are Lycos, Microsoft, Alcatel, SUN Microsystems, Intel and Hewlett Packard. The average labor productivity of a worker in Armenia is $1,500 a year, while the product made by one Armenian IT specialist costs as much as $100,000. Musayelyan notes that even though the Armenian Government has proclaimed IT as its key priority, the sector does not get appropriate support.

To note, officially, IT in Armenia ensures 1.7% of GDP. This is high as compared with the other two South Caucasian states but is much lower than in Ireland or Singapore.
