USA SENATE APPROVED BILL TO BLOCK US FUNDING FOR ARMENIA RAILROAD BYPASS

Yerevan, September 22. ArmInfo. The USA Senate has approved, the day before, the amendment to the bill to block the US funding for Armenia railroad bypass.

As ArmInfo was told in the Armenian Assembly of America, the decision was made unanimously by the representatives of a powerful Senate Banking Committee. By this decision, this the Senate has confirmed its adherence to the policy of regional cooperation in the South Caucasus against the initiative of Turkey and Azerbaijan solely to exclude Armenia from the regional projects and commercial opportunities. This measure forbids the USA Export-Import Bank to render any assistance “for the project development or construction of expensive and useless railways, connecting Turkey, Georgia and Azerbaijan in by-pass of Armenia”.

The amendment is based on the South Caucasus Integration and Open Railroads Act of 2006, introduced by Senator Rick Santorum and cosponsored by Senators Menendez, Both measures stress that U.S. policy should oppose the “The exclusion of Armenia from regional economic and commercial undertakings in the South Caucasus,” noting that such actions “undermine the United States policy goal of promoting a stable and cooperative environment in the region.”

To be noted, in the beginning, 2006, the President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev had initiated a project for this railway construction with a total cost of $400 mln. Earlier, the RA FM Vardan Oskanyan had also negatively told of this initiative.
