Azerbaijan Says Another Soldier Killed Near Karabakh

By Karine Kalantarian

Another Azerbaijani soldier has been shot dead in a skirmish with Armenian forces positioned east of Nagorno-Karabakh, reports from Baku said on Friday.

The Azerbaijani APA news agency reported that conscript Vyusal Seidaliev was killed in the frontline Aghdam district after his army detachment came under automatic gunfire from Karabakh Armenian positions on Wednesday. It said Azerbaijan’s Defense Ministry confirmed the information and accused the Armenians of violating the ceasefire regime in the area.

A spokesman for the Karabakh Armenian army, Senor Hasratian, dismissed the claims as “yet another disinformation,” insisting that it is the Azerbaijani troops that “periodically” breach the uneasy truce. “They do that so often that we don’t bother to report such violations,” he told RFE/RL from Stepanakert.

The mostly Armenian-controlled Aghdam district is the one of the most tense sections of the Armenian-Azerbaijani line of contact around Karabakh. The Azerbaijani military regularly reports suffering casualties in that area. There have been no such reports from the Armenian side in recent months.
