YEREVAN, SEPTEMBER 11, ARMENPRESS: According to the latest data of Armenian health authorities, out of the officially registered 436 HIV/AIDS carriers 415 are Armenian citizens and 318 are men. The bulk of these people are men between 20-29, 145 were diagnosed with AIDS.
Since 1988 when the first case of AIDS was registered in Armenia, 92 people, of whom 18 were women and three children, have died of AIDS. Most infection comes about through the intravenous injection of drugs and through heterosexual contacts.
The economic crisis, unemployment, labor migration and the rapid growth of HIV rates in the region contribute to the spread of HIV/AIDS in Armenia, where an unprecedented 54 new cases of HIV infection have been registered this year, 52 with Armenian citizens.
