“Turkey can face undesirable conflicts if it deploys peacekeeping forces to Lebanon. As the West comments, the developments in Lebanon is the practice of the possible conflict, military operations between U.S and Iran,” deputy leader of main pro-opposition Republic People’s Party, parliamentarian Onur Oymen told.
As APA reports, he said Turkey must not give way to be leaded to such conflicts.
“Turkey’s main problem is the terrorist attacks from the North Iraq. Since Turkey is not allowed to take urgent actions about these attacks, it would be a great mistake to involve the country into the prevention of Israeli terrorist attacks. Turkey is to be concerned about its own security first of all. In this case, we support our respected President’s standing against deploying troops to Lebanon. Not only the President but also we-main pro-opposition party as well as most of other pro-opposition parties and NGOs are against sending Turkish peacekeepers to Lebanon,” Oymen underlined.
Commenting on the current situation in the settlement of the Nagorno Karabakh conflict between Armenia and Azerbaijan, Mr.Oymen said international mediators’ are not right in demanding Azerbaijan to make a trade-off.
“It is Armenia that should be exerted pressure on. It is Armenians who occupied 20 percent of Azerbaijani territories which resulted in over one million Azerbaijanis becoming refugees. The international community should not put any pressure on Azerbaijan, which suffered from this conflict. I believe Turkey will support Azerbaijani brothers by all means. We fully support our brothers too. This is our party’s official position,” he said.
Oymen also said his party will always defend the Azerbaijani people’s rightful struggle.
“We demand Armenian occupying forces’ withdrawal from Azerbaijani territories, Armenia’s recognition of Azerbaijani authority over Nagorno Karabakh, provide opportunities for Azerbaijani refugees returning their native lands and expect Turkey to demonstrate an influential position regarding this matter,” the parliamentarian underlined.
Onur Oymen is one of the professional and experienced diplomats in Turkey.
He was ambassador to Germany, head of Turkish representation at NATO, head of Foreign Ministry Executive Office. He was elected parliamentarian fro Istanbul in the 2002 elections. He wrote more than ten analytical articles.
