Armenian Chess Team World Bronze Winner

Yerevan, November 11, By Ashot Hayrapetian, Azg. After playing draw with the national team of Cuba (2-2), Armenia finished the run for world team championship in Israeli town of Beer Sheva third. In the sixth world team championship Armenian team fought against 8 national teams scoring 4 victories, 3 draws and only 1 defeat from Russians. 18.5 points brought the Armenian team bronze medals repeating the results of 1997 in Lucerne and in 2001 in Yerevan.

With 16.5 points before the final round the Armenian team was third ahead of the Ukrainians with 15 points. Ukrainians faced Georgians in the final round and as soon the leaders of the teams, Vasili Ivanchuk and Zurab Azmayparashvili, drew the match Armenia offered Cuba draw.

In a dramatic last round the Russians accomplished the inconceivable and scored the 3.5 points required for the title. The Chinese needed only one point to triumph victory but Russians came highly motivated, knowing that they can’t concede more than half a point. The crushing defeat with 3.5-0.5 score put the runner-up Russia first. This was China’s second defeat in the tournament after the Armenian beat them 2.5-1.5 in the previous round. The 4th place in the championship went to the Ukrainian team with 17.5 point. USA (16.5), Israel (14.5), Georgia (13.5), Cuba (13) and women’s team of China (7) followed.

The Armenian team included Levon Aronian (5 points of possible 8), Karen Asrian (4.5 points of possible 7), Vladimir Hakobian (4 points of possible 7), Ashot Anastasian (2.5 points of possible 5), Smbat Lputian (2 points of possible 3) and Rafael Vahanian (05. points of possible 2).
